If you want your business to grow, you need to grow first

I know (I really do) that you’re busy.  I am.  You are. Everyone you ask is.  Busy is the new norm for everyone it seems.   Endless meetings, conference calls, travel, emails, problem solving, checklists … the list goes on and on with no end in sight for most.

But, ask yourself; are you busy doing the right things?  Are you busy doing things that add value to the lives of others?

If you’re reading this, you’re a leader.  You may run the company.  You may be an ambassador on the front lines.  Regardless, you are a leader.

Leadership is about being of service to others.  It’s about adding value to their lives in a way that allows them to add even more value to others.

But here’s the thing:  We can only add real value to our people if we are learning and growing ourselves.

If you’re too busy to listen to a podcast, read a book or attend a seminar on leadership, then how can you add value to your people every day?

I’ve personally fallen into the busy trap.  I used to pride myself on always having 3 business books on the go and attending every conference I could.   Then ‘busy’ got in the way and I found myself hanging my hat on ideas and skills I learned years ago.  So, I finally got out of my busy trap.  I just came back from the amazing John Maxwell conference in Orlando.  Three amazing days that gave me new insights, new tools and new skills.  All of which I can now use to add value to the lives of the clients we serve.  And that’s just the beginning.  I intend to continue to invest in my own growth … so that I can help others grow.

Leaders need to make time for growth.  Afterall, we have a responsibility to the people we serve.

If you’re too busy for personal growth, then how can you stand behind your commitment that you value your people?
