We’re still all reeling from COVID-19 and with the lockdown, it seems retailers will continue to be faced with challenging situations. In a past blog, I discussed what retailers should be doing to win their customers back, but what about keeping their employees happy and in place?
Exodus of Potential Employees
There is a current study that states if you’re running a business in a major city, you’re going to see an exodus of potential employees moving away from the city. This means finding the right talent required to run retail stores is going to become more difficult.
So, what are you supposed to do if that becomes reality?
The first thing you need to do is to get your staff turnover rates down. Focus on getting your staff to love you and staying longer at the store. This means you have to be a better boss, might need to give them a pay raise, and provide them with the skills and training they need to become the type of employee they want. Creating the right work environment will lead to employees staying longer.
If you’re going to be in a battle for talent in the months ahead…look after the talent that you’ve got and they will stay with you longer.
Creating Employee Life Experiences
In the past retail stores have been all about creating the best experience for customers. The smart ones focused on the staff experience, but now even that might not be enough.
According to the Harvard Business Review, one of the top trends for the retail industry is the need for employers to start managing an employee’s life experience. This means looking after their employee’s mental health and ensuring they have balance in their lives including at work. If you’re one of those retailers who aren’t even committed to the staff experience, you’re so far behind in the game and need to get moving fast.
